Bargaining and Organizing for Housing
A massive wave of evictions and homelessness is coming soon – unless Corporate Landlords like Blackstone, Related Companies, Greystar and others use their power now to stop it. Temporary government assistance, eviction and foreclosure moratoriums may have temporarily staved off this crisis, but all of those measures are coming to an end.
Black and Brown tenants are particularly vulnerable after centuries of systematically oppressive, racist housing policies that laid the foundation for our current housing system. As a direct result, Black and Brown people are more likely to be renters, face evictions and pay a higher percentage of their income on housing compared to white families.
Health experts across the globe agree that safe housing is a critical aspect of healthcare and essential for saving lives, especially during the current pandemic. It is clear that our racist systems have put Black and Brown communities at a much greater risk for infection and death from COVID-19. That’s why we are calling on corporate landlords to #CancelRent for the duration of the pandemic; commit to not evict any of their tenants for the duration of the pandemic and support extension of eviction moratoriums for all tenants; and refuse to call or otherwise engage law enforcement to protect their property and profits over the lives of Black and Brown tenants.
