From In These Times: The Chicago Teachers Unions is gearing up to further the Bargaining for the Common Good mission in the third largest public school education system in the country.
In addition to better working conditions and learning conditions for their educators and students such a librarian in every school and expanded extracurricular activities, CTU Local 1 is spreading their demands to the community with housing, migrant support and climate justice on the table.
They’re ready for the dawn of a new day overcoming a city deficit and the austerity of former mayor Rahm Emmanuel.
“The neoliberal way of doing public education is a failure. What we’re pushing for now is something that looks culturally relevant, emphasizes the whole student from restorative justice education to having sports and fine arts to making sure young people have an opportunity to participate in student government, newspaper, choir.” – Stacy Davis Gates, CTU Local 1 President
Chicago Teachers have been on the forefront of Common Good Bargaining and they’re ready to fight and win.
